Landmark collaboration unites ASU, City and all three Tempe school districts to highlight commitment to education, innovation and workforce development.

The City of Tempe officially designated October 23 as “Thrive in Tempe Day,” issuing a proclamation that united the City, Kyrene School District, Tempe Elementary School District, Tempe Union High School District, and Arizona State University in a landmark collaboration.

The effort, rooted in nearly two years of planning and partnership, highlighted Tempe’s long-standing commitment to education, innovation, and workforce pathways from preschool to Ph.D.

“Education has always been at the heart of Tempe—it’s what makes our community thrive,” – Mayor Corey Woods

“Education has always been at the heart of Tempe—it’s what makes our community thrive,” said Mayor Corey Woods. “Through Thrive in Tempe, we’re connecting families to award-winning schools, ASU’s culture of innovation, and city and business partnerships—so every student has a chance to succeed and every family has a reason to be proud.”

Families who attended the event shared stories of choosing Tempe schools through open enrollment, emphasizing that you don’t have to live in Tempe to attend a Tempe public school. Parents spoke about how access to signature programs and A-rated campuses has shaped their students’ success.

Early leadership for the initiative included Councilmember Berdetta Hodge, who also serves on the Tempe Union Governing Board. Her advocacy for linking education, city resources, and community health helped ensure Thrive in Tempe reflects the voices and values of the entire city.

“In Tempe, education isn’t just a value—it’s a business imperative,” said Robin Arredondo-Savage, President & CEO of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce. “This initiative strengthens the talent pipeline local employers depend on.”

Together, the City of Tempe, ASU, and the three school districts have created more than a partnership—they’ve built an education continuum that connects early learning, K–12 excellence, and higher education to workforce success. The Thrive in Tempe initiative stands as a model of collaboration, showing how shared vision and steady leadership can shape a stronger, smarter, and more connected community.

“This effort underscores Tempe’s leadership in aligning education and workforce development,” said Dr. Quintin Boyce of Arizona State University. “Together, we’re creating a true continuum of learning — connecting our three school districts, ASU, and community partners — all in support of a collective vision for Tempe’s social and economic vitality.”

In the months ahead, Arizona families will have opportunities to connect with Tempe’s school districts and explore the city’s commitment to educational excellence—from Pre-K to Ph.D. Upcoming community events will showcase Tempe’s innovative programs, enrollment options, and partnerships that strengthen the city’s education network.
